Boker knivesShading the small Boeker tool factory in Remscheid in the 17th century was a giant chestnut tree. This was the oldest traceable symbol that was connected with the Boeker name. Boeker was apparently very successful, since they were among the leading products in Germany and neighboring countries 100 years later. With the increasing demand in a restless political era, Hermann and Robert Boeker decided in 1829 to begin with the production of sabers. As early as September 1830, the accounting records showed a weekly production of 2,000 items. In view of of the constant increasing variety of tools and cutting instruments, and also it being a good opportunity for more worldwide sales, the family began to realise that steps had to be made in the manufacturing process to increase more interest. As a result Hermann Boeker immigrated and founded H. Boeker & Co. in New York . Meanwhile Robert had developed his enterprise in Canada, and then another branch in Mexico later in 1865. This branch is still a market leader in its country under the name of Casa Boeker. As early as 1900 most of the articles that were produced by Boeker were distributed to the US market. While in New York they concentrated mainly on cutting tools from Solingen. Not long after that pocket knives became more important than scissors, shaving blades and eating utensils. The high demand increased more quickly than Solingen was able to supply, so the American's in New York began their own production of pocket knives. A little later pliers were included as well. The relationship between the Boeker's and the Solinger's was interrupted during WWII as the Solingen factory was burned down completely and none of the equipment, tools, catalog materials or samples were spared. The firm lost its most valuable asset which was the registration of the tree symbol for the American market. This had been confiscated pursuant to American law. It was acquired by John Boker Jr in New York, in order to secure it for the distribution of the American and German products. Not long after, the destroyed factory was rebuilt. Solingen has renewed their business contact with their American cousins and started to place orders, and within a few years Boker, New York had once again became the principal customer. The 7588, 7474 and the most expensive item the sports knife ,Flagship model 182, could not get there fast enough to reach their Boker friends all over the country. Boker USA was sold in the early 1960's and was eventually bought by the scissors manufacturers called Wiss & Sons. Wiss retained the manufacture of Boeker knives and sold them together with Solingen products, now that this had happened Boeker scissors had now ceased to be competitors of the Wiss line in the American market. Wiss sold to Cooper Industries in the early 70's, this new change in America proved to be advantageous for Boker. | |||
